This time last week I was enjoying myself at a water-colour paint making workshop in Dunedin! Not my usual thing but inspirational and great fun.

Lustre glazes are absolutely gorgeous, but like so many pretty things they are TOXIC!
They are loaded with metallic oxides, sometimes upto 100% of the recipe, and for this reason they should be handled very carefully by the potter.
There are 3 types of Lustre Glazes:
1) Applied at normal glazing stage that becomes super runny but will show metallic glints where the metals collect and melt
2) Applied onto a glazed surface and fired in a special heavily reducing kiln.
3) Gold, Silver and perlescent lustres applied onto glazed surfaces and fired at a low temperature to reveal precious metals.

They all are toxic to the maker and the user. Therefore we do not recommend that you use any on surfaces that come into direct contact with food or drink. Make sure that you have gloves and a mask on to handle when you apply it and know that the metals will poison the air as they fire.
In particular we limit the use of Manganese in the studio as very small quanities ingested can cause bad stomach upsets and when it fumes in the kiln it ‘eats’ other surfaces that it settles on. The use of Manganese is linked to a multitude of illnesses.

So potters beware, treat yourself kindly and look after your health out there!

They all are toxic to the maker and the user. Therefore we do not recommend that you use any on surfaces that come into direct contact with food or drink. Make sure that you have gloves and a mask on to handle when you apply it and know that the metals will poison the air as they fire.
In particular we limit the use of Manganese in the studio as very small quanities ingested can cause bad stomach upsets and when it fumes in the kiln it ‘eats’ other surfaces that it settles on. The use of Manganese is linked to a multitude of illnesses.

So potters beware, treat yourself kindly and look after your health out there!

We've been trying out texture glazes for a project we are working on.
Making 100gm of a glaze is a great way to see how a glaze is going to work in your kiln, with your firing schedule, and on your clay.
These were pretty successful, so we are ready for the next round of testing - testing over a different coloured clay.
